January 13, 2010 by michael

What’s new in Logaholic 2.5
January 8, 2010 by michael

We’ve just updated the files on our site to our latest official release, Logaholic Web Analytics 2.5.
Many little improvements and enhancements make this release even easier to use.
One major change is that the software is now multi-lingual, so you may choose which language you want to see Logaholic in. (Well, just English and Dutch for now, but if you want to help us translate Logaholic into your language, please read this.)
Enhancements to the user interface include:
- Improved menu navigation
Easier, faster access and more consistency throughout the application. The ‘action menu’ is now available on many more items, so you can jump and drill through your stats like never before. - Sorting galore
All report tables now have sortable columns. (We love you jQuery) - Dynamic helper menus
While completing forms, you now get a helper menu showing possible input based on your stats, whether it be keywords, pages, referrers or almost anything else. - Introducing Workspace
A great improvement that will keep track of the reports you visit and put them all together on one dashboard screen so you can easily compare and analyze multiple reports with multiple settings and segmentation at the same time.
Trust me, it rocks
This release is mainly the result of feedback we received over the last few months. Thanks to all the customers who participated in our feedback survey, I hope we have a few new features that you will ‘enjoy’.
Phones, Feeds, Segments and more:
- Mobile Browser Report
iPhone vs Blackberry. Find out which mobile devices are visiting your site and which ones matter. We’ve also updated overall browser detection. - Feeds and Feedburner
RSS/XML Feed urls are now reported separately from pages, and not counted as ‘human’ visitors towards your website visitor stats. Plus, if you use Feedburner, you can also get your Feedburner stats in Logaholic. - New Graphs and Trends
More graphs have been added to the Today dashboard, which now has a little widget that enables you to switch quickly between essential graphs. Also, check out the Search Trends report to see the big search engines battle it out. - Full time zone support
We’ve extended timezone support in this version. You can now set the reporting and collecting timezones separately for any profile. - Improved Visitor Segmentation features
The segmentation system has been significantly improved. It now has full support for negative conditions and is much faster. We hope more people will now be able to discover this powerful feature. (Current users: Segmentation was called ‘Filters’ in previous versions, silly us) - Default Visitor Segments
We’ve added some default Segmentation filters to get you started, like: New visitors, Return Visitors and Mobile Visitors. But also examples for creating visitor segments for things like Google Adwords, so you can easily track your marketing campaigns performance. - Updated Test Center
The PHP Split Test result report has been enhanced with cool new metrics like the time spent on each page variation and their bounce rates.
For those SPE users out there that are blessed with Terrabyte logs files, tons of profiles and Gigabyte databases; we’re working on an (even) faster database, but that is still in the pipeline. We have added some more maintenance features in the meantime though:
- added command line script to update all profiles in the background
- added command line script to keep database size under a certain threshold of months
- added (beta) support for mysql pack and merge tables (doesn’t work on all tables yet)
- added a new user level that cannot edit the profile at all.
- added 1st party visitor cookie support in SPE style javascript tracking code

August 4, 2009 by michael
As our new 2.4 version was released earlier this week, people started to notice little problems with it. Most of it was due to the fact that we messed up ….

Web Analytics 2.1 is here
May 29, 2009 by michael
Dear Logaholics,
We’ve just released Logaholic Web Analytics 2.1 - a major update that you don’t want to miss.
This new version has some major improvements under the hood, bug fixes and some exciting enhancements. To name a few changes:
- Improved Cross Browser Functionality (works in IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome etc.)
- New Flash based Funnel graphs
- Improved Summary Report menu navigation
- Improved Filters (Traffic Segmentation)
- Optimized scalability for large screens
- Added ’speed reading’ functionality when handling large log files
- Improved User and profile management for SPE versions
- By popular demand: Added links to RIPE Whois from Click Trails
- By popular demand: Added full database CSV export option (so you can do Web Analytics in SPSS
- and more…

Death of the Today Page ?
Lots of Logaholic users have told us they really only look at the “Today Page” most of the time and only occasionally venture into the other reports. They say that everything that is important is on that page anyway…
That is a shame because a lot of effort has gone into all those other reports. If you never check them out, you are missing some informational gems.
On the other hand, I am glad the Today Page has done such a good job at doing what is was designed to do: to give you one powerful, intuitive snapshot overview of your website traffic instantly.
That is why, out of all the screens in Logaholic, the Today Page really hasn’t changed much since it’s first release in December 2005… until now!
Custom Dashboards
The completely revamped Today Page is still the way you like it … but now you can totally customize it and add any Logaholic report to your Today Overview, including Funnels and Test Center results. You can even drag and drop Today Page components to any position you want. This means you can create your own custom dashboard that shows you all the information that is essential to you, on one comprehensive screen.
Future developments
This release contains the ground works of new features and enhancements that we have been working on for a while, like internationalization, extensibility and customization. I know I will disappoint some people when I say that the translations framework did not make it into this release and neither did the plugin API. The good new is, you can expect that in the next release

Logaholic 2.0.3: Critical Bug Fixed
February 17, 2009 by michael
We’ve just released Logaholic version 2.0.3. This version works around a Mysql server bug that can seriously mess up your statistics.
If you are seeing strange statistics in your top Browsers report, your mysql server is probably a version that contains the bug.
The problem for us was introduced with Logaholic 2.0.1 Release 4, when we changed a number of SQL queries to make log files import faster. The new queries are all valid, but make use of a mysql function that is buggy in various Mysql server versions. The mysql results can become ‘unpredicable’ with these versions.
We’ve verified that at least mysql version 5.0.27 works properly, but 5.0.26, 5.0.36, 5.0.44 are all affected. In Logaholic, that means first your Browser and OS stats turn to complete nonsense, and if you have a lot of traffic and pages, it will eventually mess up all your statistics, from pages to keywords.
Since we don’t know which other mysql versions are affected, we have decided to publish this immediate fix, that works around the problem for all mysql versions.
Download Logaholic 2.0.3
All Self Hosted and SPE versions have been updated on or site, trial users can download here and customers can log in and download here.
We recommend anyone with Logaholic Self Hosted or SPE version 2.0.1 Release 4 or version 2.0.2 to upgrade to this new release as soon as possible. It will slow down the updating speed somewhat, but at least the integrity of your data will be ensured.
Once you’ve installed this version, results in the reports will return to normal for new traffic. Unfortunately, any incorrect data already in the database will remain incorrect, unless you delete the affected date range from the profile and import the log again.
These are some of the related mysql bugs, if you are interested:

Logaholic 2.0.2 adds Internal Search, Google Ranking stats
February 4, 2009 by michael
We’re happy to announce the release of Logaholic version 2.0.2. Beside some bug fixes and improvements, this version includes two brand new reports; Internal Site Search and a Google ‘Ranking’ report.
A hidden gem: Internal Site Search Keyword Statistics
The use of on-site search tools in on the rise. If you offer your visitors a tool to search your site, you can now more easily isolate the keywords from that search tool in Logaholic and display the internal search stats.
This is especially valuable because this reveals the ‘intent’ of your visitor much better than a page view ever can. Since the visitor is already on your site when they perform the search, these keywords can tell you what visitors wanted from your website specifically. This is valuable data that you can use to improve your site, in giving visitors what they want.
Google Ranking
We’ve also added a report that will show you on which Google search result page your website was listed when a visitor used a certain keyword to find it.
This is not as elaborate as the fancy Position Analyzers out there though, it’s pretty simple. It does not give you the exact search result position for your website, but it will show you on which search result page your site was found - first, second, third result page etc.
Using the date range selector you can see if the search engine listings for your keywords are improving or not. You can also easily spot good keywords that could be improved to bring in more traffic.

How to Split Test a Wordpress site
October 30, 2008 by michael
What if you want to try something completely different ?
What if you want to go beyond single page split testing and test an entirely new website, with new content, sales copy, a different design, the works ?
If you combine the power of Logaholic Web Analytics and a content management system like Wordpress, there is a pretty easy way to pull off this magic trick.
If fact, if you are reading this, you are one of my test subjects and you are looking at the new website
I can now run both websites simultaneously and I’m sending 30% of visitors to my new site, and 70% to the old one as a control group.
Using the Logaholic Split Testing system I can track users to each website version and compare the results. Is the new website better at converting more visitors to trial downloads, subscribers and customers ?
You know the old saying ‘Don’t throw away your old shoes before you have new ones’ (is that a saying in your language?) is very true here. By testing your new site before you destroy your old one, you can be sure you are making the right decision and you have the opportunity to fix any problems without too much ‘damage’.
Step by Step Instructions
- Make a copy your wordpress database
For your new website, I’ll assume you will use your current site as the starting point. Before we can change the content and settings of the new site, we need to make a copy of the wordpress mysql database, so our original site can stay unchanged.
There are a number of ways you can make a copy of a mysql database, please read this if you are not sure how to do this. In my case, I could just copy the database folder like so:
> cp -r /var/lib/mysql/wordpress /var/lib/mysql/wordpress_copy
> chown -R mysql:mysql /var/lib/mysql/wordpress_copy - Create a Split Test in Logaholic
Open your Logaholic, go to “Test Center” and click “Create a new PHP split test”. Enter a name and description, something like “Website Split”, “This will split test the entire website”.
Leave the “Import Test URL” field blank and click “Create”. Next, leave the variation fields completely blank, just click “Create” again.
Now, click the link to save your test file. The file will be named something like this:
profilename-splittest10.php
Once published, this file will set a cookie for your visitors with a value of A or B, so we know if we want send them to website A or website B (the new one).
The cookie variable will be named like this:
$lgprofilename10
- Edit wp-config.php
Make a backup copy of your wp-config.php file (located in your wordpress directory). Next, open it in your favourite editor. At the top you find a line that looks like this:
// ** MySQL settings ** //
define(’DB_NAME’, ‘wordpress’); // The name of the databaseWe are going to replace this with this:
// ** MySQL settings ** //
if (@$lgprofilename10!=B) {
define(’DB_NAME’, ‘wordpress’); // The name of the old database
} else {
define(’DB_NAME’, ‘wordpress_copy’); // The name of the new database
}This piece of code will load the new database for any user that has a cookie value of “B”, and the old site for anyone else (cookie=A or no cookie at all).
Save the wp-config.php file and upload it to your server.
To preview your new site, just open it in your browser and add ?lgprofilename10=B to the url.
- Build new website
To build the new site, you’ll have to set the cookie permanently, so you can log into your wordpress administration area using the new database.
To do this, create a new file called “manualcookie.php” (or whatever you want to call it) and put this code in there:
<?php
if ($cookie==”off”) {
SetCookie(”lgprofilename10″,”",time() + 8640000,”/”,$HTTP_HOST,0);
} else {
SetCookie(”lgprofilename10″,”B”,time() + 8640000,”/”,$HTTP_HOST,0);}
?>Save the file, upload it to your server and open it in your web browser. Now you’ll be the only person in the world that will see site B when you visit your site.
You can now log into wp-admin and make your new website.
If you need to see your old site, you can always open a different browser (like firefox) or you can remove the cookie again by opening manualcookie.php?cookie=off
- Add Split Test Code
When you are finished creating your new website and ready to start testing, copy the logaholic split test file (profilename-splittest10.php) to your wordpress directory.Next, open index.php (the one in your wordpress directory) and add this line to the top of the file:
include(’./profilename-splittest10.php’);
Once you save the file, your visitors will automatically get the cookie and be directed to either your old or you new site.
- Evaluate Results
Now, some visitors will start seeing your new website. Open your Logaholic, click Test Center and Click the ‘Website Split’ link to view the Split Test result report.Use different KPI’s / target files to evaluate how well each site converts to your most important files, the Split test report will tell you which site is the Winner !
- Go live with confidence
Once you have your results. Just edit wp-config.php again, so it always loads your winning website database.
“profilename” will be replaced with the actual name of your logaholic profile and
“10″ will be replaced with the split test ID number, please keep that in mind.
Pretty cool right ? Please leave your comments below, thanks!

New Official Release Logaholic Web Analytics 2.0.1
October 3, 2008 by michael
I’m very happy to announce the official release of Logaholic version 2.0.1.
Logaholic 2.0.1 is a major update as it uses a completly new database layout. The new database stores information more efficiently resulting in smaller, faster data tables.
As a result Logaholic 2.0.1 is much faster when generating reports for longer periods of time or for sites that have a lot of traffic. It does this without compromising any of the details. You can still drill down to the nitty gritty level and see each and every click on your website.
Logaholic 2.0.1 uses approximately 40% less disk space and can easily be 15 x faster in generating reports. With larger datasets, the increase can be over 100x times faster.

Logaholic 2.0 RC10 - Lots of improvements!
April 7, 2008 by michael
We just wanted to let you know we’ve updated Logaholic to version 2.0 RC10.
One major change is that Logaholic now correctly detects Microsoft’s ‘cloaked’ web crawlers. Yes, Microsoft has done it again. They seem to have unleashed a wierd version of their ‘livebot’ spider a while ago.
I guess it travels slowly because we did not notice it before, but since a few weeks, it’s all over the place. It hits a site from a whole range of IP addresses and does not even identify its self as a crawler, it looks exactly like a regular visitor. However, they all come from one IP range and only if you resolve the ipnumber it’s origin is revealed as ‘livebot-xx.search.live.com’
The previous version of Logaholic will not detect these new livebot requests as crawlers and since they come from potentially hundreds of different ipnumbers, your stats can be seriously inflated and your top keywords report filled with sex and drug related junk keywords, courtesy of microsoft.
We’ve fixed it so it groups all requests from the IP range to a single visitor and classifies it as a crawler so it’s filtered out of things like keyword reports.
Other changes:
- Updated charts files to latest version
- Fixed return visitors bug when we have a lot of crawlers
- Started detecting new livebot based on ip range, merging to one ip
- Filtered out crawler request in search engines report
- Now deleting global settings correctly after delete
- Accurate log file esitmates now work on multiple files
- Actionmenu links to trends now always displays more than 1 day
- Fixed error reporting level
- Added a ‘hide’ feature to disable parts of the software, i.e demo mode (see hide.php)
- Improved handling of long urls and keywords
- Improved report table headings
- Added date selection back in notes system.
- Added last 24 hours to quickdates
- Added loading indicator in funnel reports
- Removed crawlers from funnel stats
- Improved visual mode
- Changed Top Pages reports
- Added most crawled pages report
- Fixed some layout bugs
- Added daterange support in sidepanel links in testcenter
- Silenced argc in update.php
- fixed jumping hr on interface in IE7
- Changed logaholic javascript tracker to work directly with mysql again.
- Changed license system, ioncube is no longer required.
All versions have been updated on our site, so please log in and visit your order page to download the latest version.
If you are not a customer yet, our Free Trial has also been updated to this version. You can get it here.
Thanks for all your feedback!
Michael

Please Resubmit Support Tickets
March 21, 2008 by michael
Our email hosting provider installed new SPAM filters a few weeks ago. We had pretty ‘agressive’ filtering enabled on our incomming suport and sales email accounts, as they receive a huge amount of spam.
Unfortunately, the new filters were a bit too enthusiastic.
A lot a valid support emails have ended up in the Spam box, which is purged every 3 days.
If you’ve sent us a message in the last 2 weeks and did not receive a reply from us, there is a good chance your email was blocked or deleted by now. In this case, please resubmit your suport ticket here.
The filter settings has been lowered now, so your message should get through again.
Our apologies for any inconvenience.
The Easy Way To Split Test Web Pages (Part 1)
March 20, 2008 by michael
A/B Split Testing content on your website is a great idea. But implementing it is often tedious, hard work.
No so with Logaholic Web Analytics. The new “Test Center” in Logaholic 2.0 makes running a split test as easy as it can be.
To show you the concept, I’ve created a typical example situation in which you can use split testing to great effect, with ‘minimal’ effort.

Server Crash
December 7, 2007 by michael
We’re back! After what seems to be the longest 40 hours of my life, I’m happy to say we’re back online.
Our Hosting provider moved our server to a new location and managed to completely fry the motherboard in the process. The replacement server would be up in a few hours they said.
Yeah Right!
Anyway, we’re frantically building up the new server, and most things should be working again now.
My apologies for the inconvenience if you visited us during this down time!
Server Maintenance
December 5, 2007 by michael
Our server will be moved to a new hosting facility tonight, so we’ll be offline for a few hours.
This should take from about midnight to 6 am on december 6th.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
What’s new in Logaholic 2.0 ?
October 5, 2007 by michael
Now that Logaholic 2.0 Beta has been released to our test users, I am starting to get a lot of questions from other people who want to know what Logaholic 2.0 is all about before installing the beta.
So, I guess it’s time to reveal some of it!
I could soup up a short list here with what’s new, like a cool new user interface, new Trend Reports, Sales Funnel Analysis, support for SQLite databases and that sort of thing, but where is the fun in that? I would rather give some details about a couple of features that can really make a difference for your online business.
In the next few weeks, I’ll be writing a couple of posts on this blog, and each day I’ll highlight one of these new features in Logaholic 2.0.
Today, I want to tell you about something we’ve called “Filters”.
A simple word for some hardcore web analytics.
Logaholic 2.0 allows you to slice, dice and segment your traffic in any way you want. Filters basically enable you to define a sub-group of visitors and lets you view almost any Logaholic report for these visitors separately. This makes it very easy to isolate groups of visitors that came to your website via a certain ad campaign, for example.
As you know, not all visitors are created equal. Some are better than others and the ones that make you money are the best. The first step in getting more of the right visitors is to know which traffic sources send you the best quality visitors.
Logaholic filters helps you categorize your traffic so you can do in-depth research on visitor behavior for any type of group you want to define.
This is not only great for analyzing the effect of marketing campaings or reporting traffic statistics to an affiliate partner, it’s also great tool to help you improve your website by comparing groups.
In short, Logaholic Filters turns your generic traffic data into a 3D information goldmine
We’re still accepting new beta users, so if you want to give Logaholic 2.0 a try make sure to get on the notification list and you’ll still be able to download your copy:

Happy Analyzing!

A few days ago, I was talking with SEO consultant Chris Price, an organic search specialist and Logaholic customer. Chris told me how Logaholic had been one of the tools he used to achieve a Google #1 position for their SEO keywords. And the metrics he was looking at especially, are not what you would expect.

Use Web Analytics to find more traffic
May 22, 2007 by michael
Today, I want to share with you a method I have used to double my traffic and my sales. If this method will work for you I don’t know. But it is very simple and worth a try.
Traffic Duplication Strategy
In a nutshell it comes down to this: duplicate what already works.
Step 1: Find out which referring sites are most valuable
Step 2: Investigate the referring site.
Step 3: Find 5 sites that are just like the referrer
Step 4: Try to get a link on these new sites
In more detail, this is how you can use Logaholic to get the information you need.

Logaholic Keeps Growing
April 25, 2007 by michael
We are very thankful that so many people are finding their way to Logaholic. This growth has also brought us a lot more support mail and recently our response times have been slipping a little (oeps!). Since great customer support is something we will not compromise on, we’ve made some improvements.
We’ve decided to centralize the help documentation and customer support into one streamlined Support Center.
One integrated system will make it much easier for us to respond to questions and create helpful documentation anybody can use. We’ll be adding lots of articles to the knowledge base.
This Support Center replaces the the old helpdesk ticket system and the forum. You can still email us at sales@logaholic.com or at support@logaholic.com but your messages will automatically be processed through the support center. Cool ai ?
If you still have open tickets in the old helpdesk, don’t worry, we’ll be sending you a reply shortly.
One more housekeeping note: We’ve changed Email hosts and our DNS has been altered today. Email deliverability could be spotty for the next 48 hours tops.
Logaholic version 1.93 released!
March 13, 2007 by michael
Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to let you know we have updated Logahoilic Website Statistics & Analytics to version 1.93. Both the Trial and the Paid versions have been updated.
Current customers can log in here. Click My Account and View your order history to find the download link.
Otherwise, please download the trial version from our website here
http://www.logaholic.com/wp/trial-download/
What’s new ?
- Incoming traffic from from ads on the Google Content Network is now logged as being from the source domain, not from “googlesyndication.com”.
If you advertise with Adwords on the Content Network (like me), this is going to save your life ! Finally you can see which sites your ads are running on, measure conversion from those sites and have a ball with Google’s Site Exclusion feature in Adwords.
Using this information, you can finally make the Google content network work in a cost effective way!
- Flash Graphs on the Trends screen no longer occasionally load off-center.
- Improved Visual Mode
- Improved Keyword detection
- Improved Useragent detection
- Optimized updater
- Lots of ‘under the hood’ improvements in this version, including better output handling when running logaholic form a cron job.
Here is a screenshot of the new ‘adsense referrers’:
